How to play

How to play Codebreaker: rules and interactive tutorial

In Codebreaker, every guess gives you information about the hidden code. The goal is to use that feedback to narrow the possibilities, not to keep guessing at random. This guide shows you how to reason through a game.

What is Codebreaker?

Codebreaker is a deduction game built around a hidden code. You uncover it by making guesses and interpreting the feedback after each attempt. Depending on the difficulty, the code contains between 3 and 7 digits.

Goal of the game

Find the hidden code in as few guesses as possible. If two players finish in the same number of attempts, time is used only as the tiebreaker.

Rules

Rule 1

Your goal is to discover the hidden code.

Rule 2

Every digit in the code is different. Zero is allowed, including in the first position, so 0123 is a valid code.

Rule 3

A green marker means: correct digit, correct position.

Rule 4

An orange marker means: correct digit, wrong position.

Rule 5

The markers are grouped together rather than placed under the digits they refer to. You have to work out which positions they describe.

Rule 6

Ranking is based first on the number of guesses. Time is used only to break ties. You can keep guessing until you find the code.

How to read the feedback

After each guess, count the green markers first: those are digits in exactly the right place. Orange markers then show digits that are present but belong elsewhere. In the teaching example below, the secret is 1234 and the guess 1438 produces two greens and one orange.

The teaching example 1234 is documentation only. It is not a live Daily secret.

For explanation only. 1234 is not a published DIGIGMA secret.

If you get stuck

Keep track of confirmed digits, excluded digits and positions that are no longer possible. Compare every new guess with the feedback from earlier attempts instead of starting over each time. Ranked mode gives no extra hint.

Interactive tutorial

The tutorial below teaches you how to enter a guess, read the green and orange feedback, and understand why a repeated digit can be rejected. Once the idea is clear, open the Codebreaker library and play a full game.

FAQ

Can the code start with zero?

Yes. The code is a sequence of digits, not a number, so a leading zero is perfectly valid.

Is there a maximum number of guesses?

No. You can keep trying until you find the code.

How is the leaderboard ranked?

The number of guesses comes first. If players are tied, time breaks the tie.
